Thank you to everyone for participating in our first annual World Cup Coffee & Tea photo contest. We received several amazing photos over the past few months. Our Grand Prize winner was selected by nearly 400 individual votes over the past month as our finalist photos were on display in our Glisan Cafe. It was a close race throughout the entire month, but in the end there could be only one winner. This year’s photo contest was Jonathan N. with this picture (below) that truly screams Portland. Though our 9 other finalists didn’t win the grand prize, they made it a long way through the contest and their photos stood out above hundreds of other beautiful entrees. All of our participants should take pride in the work they submitted because there is a great deal of talent in this city.

We at World Cup Coffee have selected our ten finalists. Congratulations to Adam T., Evan L., John K., John w., Jonathan N., Kathy M., Kim S., Robert G., Sabrina H. and Will M.; their photos were selected by our panel of judges as the 10 finalists from the 17 weekly winners. This was not an easy selection! Each has been awarded an additional prize and each are eligible for the grand prize. We will have their photos on display at our Glisan Café by noon on Monday, January 10th and will remain up there until February 9th. During this time we encourage people to come by and vote on which photo(s) they feel are the best of our Portland Photo Contest. The winner will be announced on this webpage by February 11th and they will receive 1 year of free coffee.

We will also have the ten photos posted on this web-page, but the voting will be restricted to the café patrons. No purchase is necessary to place your vote; we simply need to ensure a fare contest. We do however welcome any remarks about these photos which you can make in the comments section below the photos. These photos aren’t posted in any particular order.

Thank you for your support and interest in this fun community contest. We have enjoyed every part of this contest and we are sure there will be more in the future.

I was honoring a neighborhood friend who gave his life in Vietnam so many years ago. Bouquets of flowers scattered the granite walls to mark the occasion. Sacred Art of the Sand Mandala

This is a great photo and story from Kathy M. “Five Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Phukhang Khangtsen Monastery of southern India, renowned for their construction of sacred sand mandalas, were at the Portland Central Library last week. Portland was part of a three month multi-city tour. Look at the concentration and precision displayed by this monk, despite all the activity around him. Two monks worked all-day for about four days to complete this mandala (still incomplete when this picture was taken).” I sure wish I had seen this in person. Thank you Kathy!

Goldenrod Crab Spider

John W. steps out of the Japanese Garden and onto his front porch to take this picture. He offers the following narrative:” Well its spider time in Portland. This photo of a Goldenrod Crab Spider (had to look it up!) was taken one morning on my front porch. I am surprised it has taken me this long, but last week I made a rather big error. I overlooked this submission from a regular contestant. Portland is a very ‘dog friendly’ town. In some cases we allow our four legged members of the family to get away with murder as my front yard will often attest. A Girl and Her Dog

When I received this photo from Mike B. I read his short description, than opened the photo and immediately laughed out loud. It is no secret that I am a dog lover. The news is that my fiance and I just ordered our first puppy together. For the first time in my life, I had to consider the temperament of the breed and how good they would be with children. As much as I love Great Danes (the gentle giants), it was not a consideration due to it's size but these dogs are great with kids. This picture amused me to my very core and the timing was perfect. Here is a neat photo taken by Robert G. from the tram station at OHSU. This is the Providence Bridge Pedal of 2008. I have never actually done this event, but I have heard that it's a whole different experience reaching the top of these bridges and looking down at the city from an angle we rarely have the opportunity to enjoy.

Mimi L. writes: Hi, "I wanted to submit my photo of what is popularly known as the 'Skidmore Bluffs'. This is basically a patch of grass at the west end of Skidmore, sitting on Mocks Crest, the bluff overlooking the Willamette River below. You won’t find softball fields or rose gardens here, just some of the best views in Portland. You’ll have downtown and Forest Park on the opposite bank, and the industrial riverside areas and Union Pacific’s Albina railyard directly below (which explains why this spot is popular with the hobos). It’s a great spot to watch the sun set over the West Hills and contemplate life."

More Community Fun...

I won't lie, this photo contest is a lot of fun for all of us here at World Cup Coffee & Tea. Our reason for doing though is simply that we are a small community roaster and take great pride in the people that support us. Portland is an amazing town for several reasons including it's people and it's beauty. This contest allowed us to showcase both so it has been our pleasure. It gets even better when those that participate in the contest also understand what we are about.

With that said, I had to share a recent message from John K. (a contestant):

"Thank you for running the contest, Ken. I've been enjoying seeing all the entries - it's a really nice addition to the community, having a place to share our little views of it. I'm regularly struck by the number of people in Portland that are passionate about doing something in their private lives. Speaking of which, in case you have any interest in classical music, or know others that do, there's a group I'm peripherally involved with (I maintain their web site) called the Oregon Sinfonietta - people who pool their talents 4 times a year for performances. I took this shot two separate days, then rain interrupted my process, then the next day I go back for a third time and there was a park cleanup crew who had taken all the leaves away...and also there were cars parked in front of the building.....timing, timing, timing...this is what makes photography so much fun!...thanks again...Adam T." A Touch of Fall

One of the best parts of this photo contest is the opportunity to meet others from within the community. Another is finding the gifts that hide within the people and giving them a platform from which they can display their talent. This “final garden” photo from John W. is another fine example of this. John does not yet have a website of his own to show his work, but I have been thrilled to post every photo he has sent in over the past few weeks. I have invited him and he has graciously agreed to allow the World Cup Glisan Café to host his first exhibit starting on July 10th, 2011. I (for one) am very much looking forward to this. Our contest has brought to the surface a few people that know how to work a camera, but this photo submitted by Mimi L. reminds us of all the talented musicians we are surrounded by. Week 12 Winner

Our judges voting process is a funny thing. The three judges can have vastly different opinions on each one of these photos. After two judges have voted (with a sliding point scale method), you would think the winner is clear. Then the third judge votes unwittingly throwing the numbers completely off. In the end, the photo that wins has a special meaning to me, but I gave it the lower rating amongst all three judges. I am glad to know I can’t sway the votes… for better or worse. Also glad to know I didn't need to show your photo favoritism for it to win this weeks compitition. Congratulations Amanda F. and thank you for this photo! It is truly Portland and really does deserve to win (as illustrated by our non-biased judges).

A Wrinkle in Time

Here is a photo from Amanda F. that simply puts a smile on my face. It’s probably the sentimental part of me that looks at this photo and it reminds me of a time long past. It was the early 80’s and my brother and I had just moved back to Portland to live with my mother after my father’s death. We were very poor and living in a dodgy apartment in SE Portland. Our family car was a light blue Beetle that rarely ran which we named ‘Sky’. Yet, we were happy and it was the beginning of a far better life to come. This picture reminds me of the happiness we can find even during turbulent times just by being together. Thank you Amanda, I am sure I will come back to this photo from time-to-time to reminisce.

It takes a Portlandian to easily identify the less well know but equally unique Nike building on the beautiful campus. Mother and Child

Here is another great photo from Kathy M. complete with a brief history lesson: “This is the "Mother and Child" bronze statue at the top of Council Crest Park. The sculptor, Frederick Littman, installed this work in 1956. Originally from Hungary, Littman worked at Reed College, the Museum School and spent 30 years as an Associate Art Professor at PSU. Moving to Portland in 1941, he was responsible for bringing fine art sculpture to Oregon. His works can also be seen at the Temple Beth Israel, Zion Lutheran Church and the Portland Art Museum.” That is so cool Kathy, thank you!

I notice that when we receive particularly good photos early in the week, the submissions dwindle significantly for the remainder of the week. Portland Tugboats

Wow, here is a postcard waiting to happen… This photo was submitted by Adam T. who stated “…these boat drivers make it look easy.....It is an amazing thing to watch...I could watch them all day...” The tugboat captains are a rare breed to be sure. There aren’t many of them and a lot of training goes into their careers. They are essential to our local economy and keeping things moving on the ever-changing Columbia River. This weeks winner is Robert G. with this photo of the "Golden Rails". When I asked one of the judges that placed this photo as her #1 pick what it was she liked most about the photo she stated that it showed the commercial side and the beautiful side that makes Portland what it is. Here is a nice photo complete with its story from Alodie L. “Yesterday I was driving home and we had to do a u turn and pull over because we saw a bunch of goats. In the lot between 10th and 11th and SE Morrison there were about 20 goats. They are in the lot to eat and clear the field. It was so much fun to see a bunch of different kinds of goats. This picture is of a goat we fed through the fence. It was sticking its tongue under the fence to get the dried leaves. It ate the dried leaves like a bag of potato chips.

Swift Gathering

I have heard about this swift spectacle at Wallace Park for years now. Yet, I have never made my way up there to watch this for myself. Luckily, Evan L. captured it in this picture to show me that it truly does happen. Apparently, the best time to view this is at sunset in mid September for the greatest number of birds (approx. 4000). By now there are barely over 1000 circling, and then flying into the chimney over a matter of minutes.Cool photo Evan, thank you!
